Market & legal data in the tobacco alternatives sector in Venezuela

30th July 2024: Venezuela: Presidential elections took place on Sunday (28th July), allegedly resulting in the re-election of president Nicolás Maduro by 51% of the votes – compared with 44% for Edmundo González, his main opposition rival – press reports. The opposition claims that the election results have been altered and that González has more than 70% of the electorate’s support and should therefore be declared as president. Protests are erupting in the country. If, eventually, Maduro is officially invested as president, the ban on e-cigarettes and heated tobacco will be maintained in the long term. In the hypothetical scenario of González eventually becoming president, however, it would significantly raise hopes of the ban being lifted. Although González has not made any statements regarding these products, his party’s more pro-market stance could make it more prone to liberalise sales than the current regime.
8th August 2023: Americas: The Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO), which serves as regional office for the World Health Organization (WHO) in the Americas, has praised Venezuela for its recently announced ban on heated tobacco. The PAHO says the ban is “one of the most important achievements of the Venezuelan public health in recent years and places the country at the forefront in the fight against tobacco and related products in the region”. The ban was foreseen by TobaccoIntelligence last month.
4th August 2023: Venezuela: Through Official Gazette 42,682, the government has banned the manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, import, export and consumption of both heated tobacco and heated herbal products. The authorities say that they contain glycerin, propilenglicol and other toxic substances that are not present in the smoke of combustible cigarettes.
