- Chile: The Senate Health Committee has approved bill 12626-11 which together with bill 12632-11 seeks to explicitly include heated tobacco products in the law on tobacco, and to further regulate them and devices. The Committee will recommend the Senate approves the bill without modifications. If approved by the Senate, the bill will lapse into law.

Chile: The Chamber of Deputies yesterday approved Bill 12626-11, which together with Bill 12632-11 seeks to explicitly include heated tobacco products in the law on tobacco. The bill, introduced four years ago and approved by the Senate in March 2021, also includes certain provisions on devices and their components. However, it needs to be approved again by the Senate since the Chamber of Deputies proposed several modifications.

- Chile: The government is planning to introduce a bill in March 2023 setting out a new tax for tobacco products, press reports. Heated tobacco products are not currently subject to a specific tax, while snus and chewing tobacco are taxed at 59.5% of the retail price.

Chile: The Chamber of Deputies Health Committee yesterday heard the government’s comments on Bill 12626-11, which, together with Bill 12632-11, seeks to equate heated tobacco products with other tobacco products. The committee has set a new deadline of 17th November to end discussion and decide on the bill, which also introduces certain provisions on devices and their components.

Chile: President Gabriel Boric has placed an “urgent” priority (“urgencia simple”) on Bill 12632-11, currently being discussed by the Chamber of Deputies Health Committee. The bill, which already has Senate approval, would initially have regulated heated tobacco and e-cigarettes like traditional tobacco products. However, in March the Health Committee approved the removal of references to vaping products. The president’s order requires the Chamber to reach a decision on the bill by 26th October.

- Chile: On 30th August, the Health Committee of the Chamber of Deputies is set to discuss Bill 12632-11. The bill, approved by the Senate in March 2021, would initially have regulated heated tobacco and vaping products as other traditional products. However, in March 2022 the Health Committee of the Chamber of Deputies approved the removal of references to vaping products, so the bill exclusively addresses heated tobacco products.

- Chile: The first session of the recently convened Tobacco Control Advisory Council, an advisory body made up of scientists, doctors and civil society groups, and established by the Ministry of Health, was held yesterday, 31st May, in the context of World No Tobacco Day. The Council’s objective is to advise the authorities, provide evidence for the development of public policies, and propose legislative changes to tobacco control measures.
