Japan’s heated tobacco sector is continuing to grow strongly and to take market share from traditional cigarettes, with the main players releasing new devices in the latter part of the year and revamping their heat-not-burn (HnB) product development divisions.
In the six months from April to September, total income from sales of HnB consumables in Japan was up by 18% over the same period of last year to JPY629bn ($5.53bn), while the number of HnB sticks sold was up 12% from 21.2bn to 23.8 bn, according to the Tobacco Institute of Japan (TIOJ).
In contrast, the number of cigarettes sold in the country fell by 7.2% to 50.8bn over the same half-year period.
