Snus ‘better than WHO policy’ at cutting smoking deaths, says study author

A new study suggests legalising and promoting snus is a more effective cessation strategy than World Health Organization (WHO) tobacco control measures. And its author has called for the WHO “to move from rejecting tobacco harm reduction to promoting it”.

The study by Lars Ramström, principal investigator at the independent Swedish Institute for Tobacco Studies, found that countries which have embraced snus have performed better in lowering smoking-related death and disease than countries which have been the leaders in implementing the WHO’s tobacco control strategy.
