Japan: On 14th December, the prime minister proposed raising the tax rate on tobacco, including heated tobacco, among other commodities in order to offset defence spending. Media reports that taxes should be raised by JPY1 ($0.0073) per cigarette in the first year and then JPY0.5 ($0.0037) each year onwards. The proposal was
criticised by some members of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, suggesting that he should face a no-confidence vote.
