Unchanged rate of tobacco product use in US points to need for effective measures

While cigarette smoking in the US has dropped to its lowest level in 60 years, overall tobacco product use among adults has remained unchanged since 2017.

A recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report, based on the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), highlights this shift. From 2017 to 2023, cigarette smoking among adults declined significantly, from 10.8% to 7.9%. However, exclusive e-cigarette use surged from 1.2% to 4.1%, representing an estimated increase of 7.2m vapers, primarily among adults aged 18 to 44.
