Hungary: Parliament last week adopted a law closing a legal loophole that allowed nicotine-free herbal sticks compatible with heating devices to be sold in places other than national tobacco shops, press reports. From February 2023, these sticks will also be subject to excise duty.

Hungary: The standstill period for the EU TRIS notification of a bill to restrict sales of herbal nicotine-free sticks compatible with heated tobacco devices to national tobacco shops only ends tomorrow, 12th August. The bill also seeks to apply certain advertising restrictions to these products.

Hungary: The Supervisory Authority for Regulatory Activities (SZFTH) has provided TobaccoIntelligence with sales data on heated tobacco products, chewing tobacco and nicotine pouches. In 2021, 1.6bn sticks of heated tobacco were sold, twice the 2020 figure. From January through May 2022, 996m heated tobacco sticks were sold. Sales of chewing tobacco fell with the introduction of nicotine pouches to the Hungarian market, from 1.4 tonnes in 2019 to 269 kg in 2020, 776 kg in 2021 and 326 kg for the first five months of 2022. There were 8.2 tonnes of nicotine pouches sold in 2021, up from 1.8 tonnes in 2020. In the first five months of 2022, nicotine pouch sales amounted to 5.2 tonnes.

Hungary: The Ministry of Finance told TobaccoIntelligence today that 1.084bn heated tobacco consumables were released onto the market between January and May, bringing in an estimated revenue of HUF16.3bn ($43m) in excise duty. In the same period 394m kg of nicotine pouches raised an estimated HUF9.2bn ($24.4m) in duty, while 4.54m kg of smokeless tobacco yielded an estimated HUF100m ($270,000).

Hungary: The Supervisory Authority for Regulated Activities (SZTFH) has announced the rejection by the EU of Hungary’s request through TRIS notification to include nicotine-free herbal sticks compatible with tobacco-heating devices under tobacco regulation.
