There is currently no federal law specifically regulating alternative tobacco products like heated tobacco or snus in Switzerland. Since 1955, tobacco products have been regulated under the food and commodity laws; however, since 2017, the revised Federal Act on Foodstuffs and Utility Articles excludes tobacco products from its scope. There is now a transitional period until a specific federal law on tobacco products is developed, extended until 2023. This report provides a comprehensive overview of the current regulatory landscape, as well as the possible future regulations for these products.
